Heat pumps in the pulp & paper industry: unlocking the potential

21 May 2026
10:00 - 11:30
ONLINE

This webinar is part of the Heat BIG series – implementing industrial and district heat pump solutions!

Focusing on the pulp and paper sector, the session will present real-world applications of high-temperature heat pumps, drawing on insights from ongoing demonstration projects and industrial case studies.

Participants will gain insights from technical, economic, and environmental analyses, showcasing the practical integration and impact of these technologies.

The webinar is organised in the framework of the Push2Heat project.

Programme of the online session:

Welcome

Outlook on the Industrial heat pump sector and presentation of the new project GREENSPIRE.

Jozefien Vanbecelaere (EHPA).

Market Opportunity and Product-Market Fit in high-temperature heat pumps

The low-carbon heat and steam market is accelerating, with high-temperature heat pumps gaining traction.  However, a persistent gap between strong market interest and limited project realization points to challenges in achieving product-market fit.  This presentation shares new results from the EU-funded Push2Heat project, presenting a novel matchmaking tool that links high-temperature heat pump technologies with industrial applications.

Cordin Arpagaus (OST).

Techno-economic and environmental analysis of integrating an industrial high-temperature heat pump: Case study in pulp and paper industry.

This session will explore the integration of a high-temperature heat pump combined with a mechanical vapor recompression system in the pulp and paper industry, showing how waste heat can be recovered to produce industrial steam. It will highlight the technical, economic, and environmental potential of this solution, demonstrating its role as a sustainable alternative to conventional steam generation in industry.

Steam Generation using an Absorption Heat Transformer: Demonstration experience in a paper mill in Italy

Insights from the first results of the Push2Heat demo site in a paper mill in Italy, focusing on the use of an absorption heat transformer to upgrade waste heat for steam production. The session will highlight practical performance and integration in real operating conditions.

Laura Alonso (Tecnalia)

The largest steam-generating heat pump for the present and future: a case history from a Finnish paper mill

This session will present a large-scale steam-generating heat pump, engineered and delivered by Turboden and installed in a Finnish paper mill, where it is now fully operational and producing CO₂-free industrial steam. The 12 MWth system generates steam at 150–180°C and demonstrates high-efficiency performance under real industrial conditions, exceeding design expectations. The presentation will provide key operational results from the installation, alongside insights into system integration within an existing industrial site and the potential for replication in other energy-intensive industries.
