The EU aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. To set out how we’ll get there, it published the ‘Fit for 55‘ package.

Addressing renewables, energy efficiency, energy performance of buildings, energy taxation and carbon trading, the package revises existing legislation and sets new rules to make the European Union emissions-free by 2050.

Heat pumps are key to reaching these ambitious targets and have been identified by the Commission as a crucial clean energy technology for the decarbonisation of heating and cooling. By replacing polluting, fossil fuel heating with clean, renewable, energy – and by being three to five times as efficient as gas boilers – they contribute significantly to saving energy and mitigating climate change.

Now that all the pieces of the Fit for 55% package are agreed upon, we can take a closer look at how it will impact the future of heat pumps
