Heat pumps should get a dedicated programme within the EU’s next big research budget, EHPA argues.
The EU is designing its next research and innovation funding cycle, known as ‘Horizon Europe’. It will run from 2028 to 2034.
Within this, there is a specific instrument called ‘a European Partnership’. This means the EU and industry, research organisations and often national funders commit to a shared research agenda and co-fund it over several years.
EHPA is calling for heat pumps to get a dedicated European Partnership, and be named as a priority area in the funding programme.
Why? This would give the heat pump the sector long-term, predictable funding for work such as better efficiency, new refrigerants, lower costs, grid integration and high-temperature industrial applications. It would also signal that the EU treats heat pumps as a strategic technology.
This paper sets out more details.
