Grid connection codes for heat pumps

After months of negotiations, an agreement on the grid connection code requirements for heat pumps was reached between EHPA and the EU grid operator and regulatory bodies.

Grid connection codes are rules regulating what happens just before a potential blackout, helping to ensure energy security.

The original proposal contained requirements on the shutting down of heat pumps that would have been extremely technically difficult for most to implement.

EHPA was able to explain its concerns to the European Commission, who re-opened a workstream for the heat pump requirements, and to Transition System Operator body ENTSO-E and energy regulator body ACER, who then took up nearly all EHPA’s amendments.

The draft agreement has been sent to the European Commission, which will now review it.

EHPA will continue to advocate for its final outstanding points to be included. One of the most significant is the need for a six year timeline for implementation.

EHPA is chairing the certification workstream for these requirements and will continue to actively follow the upcoming implementing guidance documents.
