In which European country are people most likely to have a heat pump at home?
The answer: head north.
In Norway, Finland and Sweden, more than half of households already have a heat pump, making them Europe’s heat pump frontrunners.
But the picture looks very different elsewhere. In countries such as Poland, Slovakia and the UK, heat pump ownership is increasing but from a much lower point, highlighting the huge potential for future growth.
Across Europe, adoption is continuing to accelerate. In 2025, residential heat pump sales increased in 14 of the 18 countries analysed, with the strongest growth seen in Germany and Italy. Overall, around 2.9 million domestic heat pumps were sold across 21 European countries in 2025.
Today, nearly half of Europe’s heat pump market is concentrated in just three countries: France, Italy and Germany. Including Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands brings this share to more than two-thirds of the market.
The next phase of growth will come from countries where heat pump adoption is still in its early stages. With the right policies, financing and market conditions, millions more European homes can benefit from efficient, affordable heating and cooling.
