Because this project shows that decarbonising a building does not have to mean choosing between heritage, comfort and efficiency. A 19th-century farmhouse has been transformed into a five-star boutique hotel where several thermal technologies work together as one intelligent system. Heat pumps provide heating and cooling, underfloor heating delivers silent radiant comfort, and surplus heat that would otherwise be wasted is recovered for domestic hot water. Airzone coordinates these systems from a single control environment, down to individual guest-room level. What makes the project particularly compelling is that the technology is almost invisible. Guests experience a historic countryside hotel rather than a technical installation, while behind the scenes the building continuously coordinates different HVAC systems to use energy more intelligently. La Dehesa de Don Pedro demonstrates a highly replicable principle for Europe’s renovation challenge: historic and character buildings can retain their identity while adopting smart, efficient heat pump solutions capable of meeting modern expectations for comfort and sustainability.

La Dehesa de Don Pedro is a five-star boutique hotel created through the comprehensive renovation of a 19th-century farmhouse in the Extremadura countryside. The project faced a dual challenge: preserve the character and architectural integrity of a historic building while delivering the thermal comfort, energy efficiency and operational flexibility expected from a modern luxury hotel.
The solution combines heat pump technology with air-based HVAC, underfloor heating and domestic hot water production. Airzone provides the intelligent control layer that coordinates the air and radiant systems, allowing both technologies to be managed from the same room interface and according to actual thermal demand. The installation also recovers surplus heat from the HVAC system for domestic hot water production, reducing otherwise wasted energy.
Guest rooms and common areas are individually controlled, while the complete installation can also be supervised remotely through Airzone Cloud. The result is a discreet, integrated HVAC solution that reconciles heritage preservation, guest comfort and lower energy consumption.
