New research shows around 480,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the European heat pump sector. On and around 21 October 2026 this will be celebrated as the third ever Heat Pump Day focuses on Europe’s workers and manufacturing capacity.
From heat pump factory visits to a social media campaign called ‘Guess my job’, the 60 partners of this year’s Heat Pump Day are joining in!
Nearly 100 events are organised this year for Heat Pump Day, which was started by the European Heat Pump Association in 2024 to raise awareness around the benefits of heat pumps. These go from boosting Europe’s energy resilience by replacing imported fossil fuels, to cutting carbon emissions and energy bills.
Heat pumps only use a small amount of electricity – which can be fully renewable – to convert natural warmth in the air, water or ground into enough heat to warm a home, business or even provide steam or drying for factories, at up to 200°C! They are around five times more energy efficient than a fossil fuel boiler.
Paul Kenny, European Heat Pump Association director general said:
“From the factory floor to research labs and sales desks, the heat pump sector provides work across Europe. As people turn to heat pumps and away from fossil fuels, spurred on by high gas prices, the value of the industry will grow still further. The European Commission’s focus on lowering electricity taxation, if rapidly acted upon by Member States, will also be a key driver of the shift.”
For Heat Pump Day, EHPA is organising a visit to an industrial heat pump in a sugar factory in Tienen, Belgium, on 27 October, with the EU-funded SPIRIT project. You can still register here.
