The EU’s Ecodesign rules have a key aim: improving the environmental performance of energy-related products throughout their entire life cycle.

It looks at products like washing machines, computers, lighting – and heat pumps!

The EU sets specific requirements for different product groups. These requirements cover areas like energy efficiency as well as use of water, pollution, recyclability. Products that don’t meet them cannot be sold in the EU.

Ecodesign goes hand in hand with the EU’s energy labelling system – which shows how energy efficient a product on the EU market actually is.

These rules help consumers choose the best products for them. This encourages energy savings, innovation and quality.

Additionally, an energy label database allows consumers to compare energy efficiency and ensures product compliance. This is called ‘the European Product Registry for Energy Labels (EPREL)’. Try it and see!

EHPA supports Ecodesign and Energy Labelling, and is calling for faster deliberations by the European Commission to avoid manufacturer uncertainty over possible requirements, as well as longer timelines for manufacturers to implement updated rules.

EHPA’s work is also supported by the EU project Compliance Services for Ecodesign.
